The Go-Lab Portal provides access to numerous online laboratories, inquiry learning scaffolds, and interactive learning spaces for science education in schools. These tools can be used by teachers to enrich their classroom sessions with exciting scientific experiments, which can be conducted by the students themselves.

This way students can get experience of doing science and gain more profound understanding of scientific topics. The Go-Lab Portal offers a Repository for remote and virtual laboratories and inquiry learning applications suitable to support various scenarios in STEM classes. Using facetted search function, teachers can choose appropriate tools and assemble them in Inquiry Learning Spaces (ILSs) using an authoring tool. Such ILSs are structured virtual learning environments guiding students through the inquiry process and supporting them in formulating hypotheses, conducting experiments and drawing conclusions. An ILS can be created for any STEM subject and any classroom scenario. Furthermore, teachers are able to share their work in the Repository, so their colleagues can make use of it. Collaborative creation by teachers and collaborative learning by students are supported as well. Finally, in order to support teachers in their work, a support area is available, providing extensive materials explaining how to use the platform and its resources.

The Go-Lab Portal aims to promote inquiry-based science education (IBSE) in schools, opening the door to unique teaching and learning experiences in the classroom. The Portal provides a wide range of sophisticated interactive learning tools (online laboratories and inquiry learning applications) for different STEM subjects. Furthermore, it offers an authoring platform allowing teachers creating they own interactive learning spaces suitable to support particular classroom scenarios. All resources are available for free in 40 different languages. The portal consists of three main parts.

1. Repository

The Golabz Repository contains numerous inquiry learning tools teachers can use to enrich their everyday teaching practice. Currently the Repository offers more than 450 virtual and remote laboratories and 40 inquiry learning apps. Moreover, there are 500 ready-to-use Inquiry Learning Spaces (ILS) created by experts and experienced teachers. These ILSs are interactive virtual learning spaces structured according to the phases of inquiry learning process and containing online laboratories and learning scaffolds.

The Golabz Repository is simultaneously a sharing platform, where teachers and online lab owners (research projects, academic or industrial institutions) can publish the resources they have created allowing teachers from all over the world to make use of them.

The Golabz Repository is being continuously developed to provide innovative pedagogic features for teachers and new motivating learning tools for students. For example, in addition to inquiry learning apps, apps supporting the acquisition of 21st century skills by students will be provided soon.

2. Authoring Platform

The Authoring Platform “Graasp” offers science teachers the possibility to create personalised learning environments for their students. It allows them to select appropriate online labs and inquiry apps from the Repository and to assemble them together with further external resources, like PDF-files or videos, to the Inquiry Learning Spaces (ILSs). Teachers also can use already existing ILSs available on the sharing platform, copy and adapt them according to their students’ learning needs. The Authoring Platform enables teachers to create ILSs on their own or collaboratively with other teachers.

3. Support Area

The Support Area serves to assist pre- and in-service teachers in working with Go-Lab resources and implementing them in their classroom sessions. Teachers can access diverse support material like demo videos, user manuals, and tips and tricks. Furthermore, several times a year an online course is provided, which introduces the participants into the world of teaching and learning with Go-Lab. For direct contact to other Go-Lab users, there are a discussion forum as well as a Tutoring Platform where online sessions with experienced teachers or Go-Lab experts can be booked.
