Societal challenges, policy priorities and TEL: proposing a TEL research “relevance test”

22 November 2012

Technology-Enhanced Learning has been developing in the last years but has not achieved the relevance level which is needed to transform educational systems. Why? This is the main question this Online Educa Pre-conference workshop will answer to.

The Workshop, organised by the HOTEL project with the support of the European Union’s FP7, will gather some of the most important Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) support and foresight initiatives of recent years, with the aims of reflecting on the issue of TEL research relevance.

The discussion will tackle the fact that TEL research, despite its recognised level of excellence and the strong efforts that funding agencies – especially the European Commission – are deploying, does not seem able so far to reach the relevance level which is needed to transform educational systems.

The event is open to Policy Makers at different levels, TEL Industry representatives, Teachers and researchers in higher education, Educational Practiitioners, Media, Educational providers, and anyone interested in Technology-enhanced Learning.

New net-based collaborative learning activities

22 Mai 2012

There is a documented need for supporting VET teachers, trainers and tutors in including ICT in their teaching activities. Despite the advanced learning technologies, it is often the case that teachers, most of all elder ones, are frightened or even disturbed by technology. A past European project, Vitae, whose results are exploited and refined in a new project, Understand IT, has developed a set of net-based collaborative learning activities, using modern Web 2.0 tools.

Possible Futures for Technology Enhanced Learning – Dynamic Roadmapping for Uncertain Times

23 April 2012

TEL-Map is a Coordination and Support Action funded by the European Commission under the Technology-Enhanced Learning programme. It focuses on exploratory/Roadmapping activities for fundamentally new forms of learning to support the adoption of those new forms, via awareness building and knowledge management on the results of EU RTD projects in TEL and socio-economic evaluations in education.

The ultimate goal of TEL is innovation leading to new forms of learning. TEL‑Map will establish a pan-European TEL Observatory that functions as an alerting system for innovation, scanning for relevant emerging trends and events, empowering all engaged in TEL to build a multidimensional understanding of the crossroads and choose their best way forward.

[...] TEL-Map will build a platform for collaborative Roadmapping, which enables transparent assessment of TEL by different stakeholder groups. We will do this by using different approaches, different starting points, different interests and motives thus providing multidimensional views of stakeholders’ visions of the future and alternative ways to reach them. We will work with TEL stakeholders to help them create and dynamically update their roadmaps and coordinate their development activities. Building on this, TEL-Map aims to enable each participating TEL stakeholder community in Europe to share its insights on past and current TEL, and at least some of its thinking on TEL futures, so that all TEL networks can benefit from improvements in the capabilities of the strongest participants in TEL and insights and innovative developments can be spread and adopted more rapidly. As part of this capacity building, we shall work with community representatives to empower them to better discern and interpret what is going on within other participating TEL stakeholder communities (or going on externally and known to those other communities), and to share and exchange knowledge with these communities in order to take advantage of emerging trends and developments in TEL, of which it might not yet be aware.

eLearning Papers 28: Cyber Security and Education

With the rapid evolution of online media, new technologies have become more targeted and more sophisticated. This new context has been widely recognized in relation to its educational, social and even economic benefits. Wide use and popularity of social media also brings to the fore the notion of security and concerns regarding the management of the personal information circulating and stored on the web. Schools are an important resource, now that young people's use of the Internet is growing, and smaller children are quickly gaining access to and becoming proficient users of technology. Publication: April, 2012.

eLearning Papers 29: Learning and Active Ageing

Inspired by the European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity Between Generations 2012, eLearning  Papers will investigate how eLearning affects the lives of senior citizens. As a population at risk of marginalization, the elderly appear particularly suited to benefit from open educational resources. What is being done to make sure these digital immigrants can use and benefit from new educational technologies. Publication: May, 2012

eLearning Papers 30: 21st Century teachers and their workplace

This issue looks at how new learning technologies and other recent innovations have affected teachers' professional environments. 21st century learners has become a buzz-word in the field of educational research. This issues applies that term to the teachers, seeking practical examples and prospective visions that analyse what it means to be a teacher in the knowledge society. Publication: July, 2012.

eLearning Papers 31: The worlds of TEL - Scientific and Cultural perspectives

Technology-enhanced learning is not a new topic but the more normalized it becomes, the more we are able to develop nuanced critical perspectives on its development and impact. This issue will invite contributions that present a diverse range of practical and theoretical examples in order to discuss the state of the art regarding this topic, with special attention to areas that seem to be more problematic, or in particular need of further research. Publication: September, 2012.

eLearning Papers 32: Mobile learning, cloud computing and the promise for ubiquitous learning

While learning has always expanded beyond the walls of the classroom, the proliferation of devices and applications, which have greatly expanded when, where and how information can be accessed and stored, brings this issue to the fore. How have such devices had an impact in learning, and what role may they play in the future? This issue hopes to showcase practical examples and generate serious reflection on an emerging topic. Publication: December, 2012.
